Liwayway (Wing) Besilos

  • RN, Intensive Care Unit, Westmead Hospital

  • NSWNMA Branch Delegate since 2016

  • Current NSWNMA Branch Secretary

I started my nursing career in Australia in 1997.  I’ve been an ICU nurse for 19 years.

I’ve been a member of the NSWNMA/ANMF since I became a Registered Nurse, except for the years I worked overseas, as I believe that the power of nurses and midwives is achieved through unionism.

I’ve seen and experienced the deterioration of the health care system and the working conditions of nurses and midwives from 1997 to today. The goal of nursing is to deliver safe patient care. Nurses cannot provide safe quality nursing care in an environment that places them at risk physically, mentally, and emotionally. The health care system will only be able to support nurses and midwives by safe staffing ratios so that we can deliver quality safe and wholistic care.

I support the NSWNMA’s campaign for Ratios on a shift by shift basis across city and country areas, in all specialities, in aged care, and in the private sector. Patients in the whole of New South Wales deserve to be safe and be given wholistic care.

I humbly ask your support for election as an ANMF NSW Branch Councillor.
