Kate Goodman
RN, Ryde Hospital
I’m 27 years old and I started my nursing new grad year in 2019. My first job was at Cooma Hospital which is a rural hospital and then exchanged to a metro hospital called Ryde. I have worked in several different areas throughout my time there, including short stay, cardiac, COVID clinic, PeriOp, transit and now 2 years in ED. I’m currently an RN 4 and actively working towards my ALS and resuscitation qualifications.
I became a union member during my new grad year with the help and support of some strong union members in Cooma. These same members guided me through my first Union conference where I was struck by the passion and energy of like-minded people wanting to fight for better conditions in nursing. I spoke to a motion regarding the protection of nurses and midwifes from sexual assault in the workplace. I shocked even myself by finding such a strong connection to fighting for a cause, to make life better for myself and others.
I find the opportunity to have a voice whilst being a member of Council, which I value being a younger unionist, to have a platform where my input and thoughts are valued as important.
Major causes I like to address in Council is the fact your post code should not dictate your access in health care, I have a passion for rural nursing and tackling its unique challenges.
If elected, I’ll ensure young nurses and midwives have a more active role in changing their workplace and raise their voices to make positive change together.
