Emma Gedge
Registered Midwife, Wollongong Hospital
I have been a Registered Midwife since 2013 and an active member of the NSWNMA since 2017, holding positions of delegate, president and vice-president of the Wollongong Hospital Branch and taking part in the 2019 ratios campaign. I am a member of the Midwifery member network and I have experienced first- hand the many challenges that are facing our healthcare workforce.
Midwives are being pushed to breaking. We are faced with dangerous workloads, poor staffing mix and an erosion of our skills in a specialist area.
We have an obstetric system that increasingly intervenes in otherwise well women and babies, increasing our workload, and decreasing the satisfaction of the women and families we are trying to care for.
We need babies counted in numbers and staff to patient ratios to ensure that Midwives can go to work and feel that they are making a difference in the lives of women, babies and families.
I am passionate about advocating for the rights of Nurses and Midwives and with your vote it would be my privilege to be able to continue to do just that as councilor.
